Low Iron

I just had blood work done following my 3-year anniversary.  Everything was good -- diabetes under control; no high cholesteral or triglycerides like I used to have -- but my iron was low.  Any recommendations for an iron supplement?  I presently take 2 Flintstone complete vitamins, B12 and B1.

Thanks.

Jill,
Dr. Pupkova suggested that I take 60mg chewable iron with vitamin C. I purchased mine from Barix store but then went to Walgreen's and it's way cheaper and then just purchased Vitamin C seperately. Hope this helps.

People comment on my over 100 pound weight loss and attribute it to my WILLpower, but it is my WANTpower: I WANT to be thin and healthy more than anything else!

My surgeon, Dr. Dempsey, put me on Ferrous Gluconate Tablets 324 mg, one tablet daily.  My Iron and my surplus iron was depleted.  In addition to the iron I take chewable vitamin C 500 mg to help absorbe the iron.
These are over the counter but I had to order them at CVS through the pharmacy.

I take the ferrous gluconate like Ida. When I had my baby I lost a ton of blood and my iron tanked. we are working to get it back up. Dr also reccomended a bowl of total cereal a day. Believe it or not that alone got my H&H from 6.8 to 9.4 in 2 weeks.

Liz,

Total cereal is a God send.  The last time my iron depleated because of heavy bleeding prior to my hysterectomy, I lived on Total with a handful of raisins in it.

Right now my pouch doesn't like cold cereal, once I'm able to again I will figure that into my foods again....

I eat mine with raisins, almonds and soy milk. My pouch doesn't tolerate it well but I eat it anyway since it is working. Oh and I eat it dry too, my pouch tolerates that better. I found a recipe for total cookies too I want to try.

The cookies sound interesting.  Let me know how they are - I'd like to try them.  Gene and I both have low iron, every little bit of iron helps :-)

I also have an issue with low iron. It was making me VERY tired! Talked to my hemotologist and he put me on IV Iron for four treatments. I have done all four treatments and feeling alot better. Might be an option.....

P.S. It is very common with WLS patients.

That is what Geisinger recommends

I have been getting IV iron infusions at my hematologist's lately.  My iron tanked about a month ago, and I had no clue.  I thought I was tired from chasing my grandchildren.  LOL  I also take a supplement and C.
